Men's Division One: Week Three results

Corinthian 3 (Sam Lopsey, Karl Eggert, Glen Holmes) Glenanne 3 (Graham Shaw, Stephen Butler, Eddie O'Malley)
Two goals in the closing stages rescued a point for Glenanne after they trailed for most of the match against an improving Corinthian team. The Glens had an early setback when Alan Browne (pictured) - playing at centre-back - went off injured. Corinthian profited, Sam Lopsey scoring from a corner and Karl Eggert got a reverse.

Graham Shaw's reverse pulled one back in the second half but Glen Holmes restored the advantage. Butler scored on his return with seven minutes left before Eddie O'Malley stole a point.

Monkstown 1 (Alan Lewis) Fingal 1 (Adrian Sweeney)
Fingal left Rathdown pleased to have held out for a point, surviving over 10 penalty corners while getting none to their name. Adrian Sweeney got his third in three games for a 1-0 half-time lead. Alan Lewis scored from a crash ball into the circle, getting the vital touch for an equaliser while the Town also had a goal disallowed. Monkstown were on top for most of the second half as Fingal lived on the break for long periods. Both sides now turn their attentions to the IHL.

Kilkenny 5 (Tom Manning 2, Gary Sharman, Paul Maher, Hugh Kelly) Railway Union 2 (Paul O'Brien, Mark English)
Kilkenny took off some of the early-season pressure of two losses as they take the lead once again in the battle to get clear of the relegation zone. Their ability to target teams at a similar level worked wonders last year and five goals against Railway will have a huge psychological effect.

UCD 1 (Robbie McFarlane) Three Rock Rovers 5 (Peter Blakeney, Michael Maguire, Gary Ringwood 2, Neal Megarity)
Rovers laboured for 60 minutes against a well-drilled and defensively organised UCD side in their first outing of the season. Robbie McFarlane scored against his former club and they held Three Rock at 1-1 until ten minutes into the second half. Stephen O'Keefe showed why he is such a big addition while Ben Grogan was another big player.

They could not hold out forever, though, as Rovers soon carved out the chances to win the game. Mick Maguire scored from the same corner that did for Pembroke, Gary Ringwood knocked in two quickfire goals and Neal Megarity got a first senior goal on the final whistle.

Pembroke 5 (Alan Sothern 2, Conor Harte 2, Craig Fulton) YMCA 1 (Will Powderly)
Pembroke picked up their first win of the season in a decent Sandymount derby. They built up a 3-1 lead by the break as Craig Fulton stepped back into a playing role for the day, scoring from a rebound. Will Powderly got the response after missing last week's match against Corinthian and YM will also add the services of the wandering Graham O'Neill to their squad.

Alan Sothern got his second and third of the season to join Paul O'Brien, Peter Blakeney, Adrian Sweeney and Graham Shaw at the top of the league scoring charts while Conor Harte (pictured) got two goals from corners.

Munster result:
Cork Harlequins 0 Cork C of I 2 (Alec Moffett, David Hobbs)
In the first meeting of the season between Cork's finest, CI claimed round one and while the nine goals from last season's Munster Cup final never appeared, the duo played out an absorbing battle.
Chances were at a premium as seven current and former internationals took the field with both defences in command.
C of I, though, got the vital breakthrough 15 minutes from the end thanks to an excellent breakaway move, started by Stephen Parker and finished with a beautiful interchange between Alec Moffett and Johnny Bruton, with the former left with the simplest of finishes.
David Hobbs crashed in a short corner rebound after the final whistle for 2-0 and local bragging rights.

Saw the Pembrooke v YM game and was very impressed. Thought both sides played good hockey, and the scorline doesnt match the play. Pembrooke scored three goals, from a rebound off a save, and one goal that never should have been allowed. Thought the youth on show for both teams was superb, with Stuart Lougherey, Jamie Tobin and Luke Chadwick, the shining stars for the future.

was at the chc glens game, chc dominated glens for about 50 munites and should of scored atleastt 2 more. glennane got back into the game towards the game and robbed to goals at the end, fair play they show good fight when down. good game.

pembroke scored one goal from a rebound off a save, craig fulton got it,conor harte score two corners straight in,alan sothern scored from play and a corner,so you may have been at the game but you certainly weren't quite paying attention!

IHL Rules will not suit Glennane --won't have time to challenge Umpires and slow play down as ball will be at other end !

Anonymous said...

chinless wonders having a go again at the Glens.Despite not being allowed to play their full team in Leinster League will finish in top three.I hope the bigots and begrudgers choke on it.

Glennane did very well to come back and showed what they are all about. However their abuse to the umpires was disgraceful!

The only reason people talk about the glens on here is because they are scared to do it to their faces. No comments have names to them. Grow up.
Not a glens player

Match in Cork was very good. Harlequins had more chances from play and more corners but were poor in finishing and execution of corners. Would fancy CI to have good chance of winning IHL.

Karl Eggert=Goal Machine

Anonymous said...

Karl Eggert is a goal machine, is 100% correct, he is scoring week in and out for school i hear...Wesley have a front 6 to die for this year, and will have the best attacking team in the country..However their defence might let them down when it comes to the big games!

Anonymous said...

i was at the 1st and 2nd team games that karl played at the weekend!! on the ball he doesnt look like the player that people talk about, he is very readable. BUT...you cant ignore the goals. he gets in the right spots. and puts them away neatly. Great finisher.

Who on earth is Karl Eggert!!Scores a goal and he's the next Rooney!

do your research. this boy scores goals for fun. ask anyone in chc or wesley.

Cork C of I V's Fingal

CI are looking very strong this season with the return of JJ, but there's a worry as to having a decent keeper as Ruddle is still out injured. Also a few questions to be asked of their defence. Predict them to wipe the floor with Fingal.

Banbridge V's Lisnagarvey

Big game to start off the IHL. Not sure who will come out on top of this. Depends on whether mccabe is fit to play.

Three Rock Rovers V's Monkstown

Rovers havent progressed enough in matches so far this season, but with EHL coming up, it's hard to try and peak so early in the season. Monkstown will be there to upset Rovers again after last seasons surprise victory in the ISC. Rovers will be under pressure in midfield after losing Mcconnell to injury, but with wide players and forwards of Piccioli, Maguire x2, Darling, Blakeney etc etc, there will be plenty of opportunities in front of goal. Rovers should win by 2 goals.

Pembroke V's Cork Harlequins

Neither side hold the domestic title, with CI doing the double over Quins and Rovers and Glennane sharing the Leinster trophies. Pembroke, if they have Gormley back, should win this, being at home on that fast pitch will give them the upper hand. Quins seem to be dangerous from corners, as are Pembroke. Pembroke by 2/3

Instonians V's Cookstown

what about ye?

Annadale V's Glenanne

Da Glens will have a hard time going up to play Annadaaaaaaale, but if Butler and Sharpie provide their usual goals for Glenanne, then I dont see why not win away.

Cork C of I V's Fingal

C of I by a few, their corners and Fingals defence should be the difference

Banbridge V's Lisnagarvey

Both teams have started poorly in the league, Banbridge's home advantage should see them through by the odd goal

Three Rock Rovers V's Monkstown

Monsktowns lack of a corner expert will cost them dearly, Rovers by 2

Pembroke V's Cork Harlequins

Pembroke best team in the country last year, Harlequins declining, Pembroke will win handily

Instonians V's Cookstown

Cookstown 3-1, looking very good this year and looking to push their domestic dominence onto a national front.

Annadale V's Glenanne

Fancy Annadale for this one, Glenanne have looked out of sorts so far with two bad wins against minor opposition and a draw against Corinthians.

C of I should have no problems, Annadale too, rovers will struggle without a centre midfielder but on paper should have no problems. All others could see upsets. Im guessing garvey, harlequins and inst.

Stephen, think u should do a predictions article on each team for the IHL too. You could potentially beat your own record and get all 12 wrong?

will there only be two places into EHL if rovers qualify to round 2 and then pembroke win the european trophy? can anyone (Queso) be able to tell us the scenario?

Queso said...

Ireland will only get two places in the EHL if our country's ranking improves to 8th place or better overall.

Here's the points rankings for 2008:
7. Belgium = 17.65
8. Scotland = 17.33
9. Russia = 17.16
10. Ireland = 16.6

Ultimately our clubs just need to earn relatively more points than than those from the country's above us, to move up.

Three Rock Rovers and Pembroke Wanderers are the two clubs earning Ireland's points this season.

If Pembroke were to win the EuroTrophy and Rovers progress to round 2 of EHL, then that "should" be enough to earn more points for Ireland than the clubs from other country's. But it's no guarantee!!!

Queso, you really are a man of mysterious hockey knowledge. thank you wise cheese

Anonymous said...

Who is Queso? More mysterious than the Stig!

Anonymous said...

considering the stig is damon hill, then 'Queso' must really be more mysterious than him...

there should be a post on the mysteriousness of the one they call 'Queso'

Anonymous said...

Only confirmed Stig was the first one 'the black stig'- Perry McCarthy

No one knows who the white stig is or has been. Could be Damon Hill, could be Tiff Needel

In any case his trued identity is as mysterious as Queso's.

I reckon Queso is Paddy Jackman!

if you dont know who Queso is you dont play hockey in leinster....

Anonymous said...

Enlighten those of us who dont play in Leinster

Anonymous said...

i think this mysterious 'Queso' should test-drive all the new sticks across the range, and see which one he gets around the pitch fastest with?!?!??! would finally put to rest what stick is the best out there.

rumour has it that karl smith is joining UCD..i think this move would add some much needed stability around the centre of the field for the students!!
