Passmore names training squad

David Passmore has named possibly his last training squad, announcing a 26-man squad for the senior men’s camp on the 25th & 26th of October from which he will select his reduced squad to play Argentina three days later.

Three Rock Rover’s trio Phelie Maguire, Peter Blakeney and Mitch Darling are left out due to the Euro Hockey League while there are four uncapped players included. Ulstermen Peter Caruth (Annadale), Colin Donaldson (Cookstown) and Simon Todd (Mossley) are called up while Monkstown keeper David Fitzgerald gets a deserved inclusion, with Gareth Lennox unavailable.

Speaking of the training camp, Passmore said “This will be a high intensity camp to ensure we can get the team up to the physical and mental speed of matches in the short time we have before the Argentina games. Players should be keen to impress with the new coaching announcement imminent”

surely a picture of david fitzgerald would be more apt for this article?!given its a big step for him after a couple of years of impressive performances, rather than a picture of a player not involved in the games or camp

You're probably right... not sure I have one. If you have one, please send me one!

I presume that this is the same David Fitzgerald you played in goal for Monkstown 2nds last weekend. Now that is completely wrong.

go on the big man. Fitzy is a good lad and he deserves his chance!!!

Can somebody please explain to me how the likes of Neil Hamilton and Paul Gleghorne are being shunned for the likes of Colly Donaldson? It really doesnt make much sense to me. Also Peter Caruth getting into the side, is he even starting for the Annadale 1st team. Get the likes of Justin Sherriff back playing and then maybe we might begin to contemplate London 2012.

For Leinster League 1st teams you only have to register 11 players with numbers 10 & 11 acting as floats and eligible to drop down and play 2nds.

With the challenge many clubs face concerning numbers of goalkeepers available, I'm sure Fitzy was probably registerd on the 1st as number 10 or 11 legitimately allowing him to play 2nds.

Up until today he wasn't in the Irish Development Squad, so I really don't see what your whinging about!!

Obviously for next months Leinster League registrations Monkstown should move him up their 1st team registration to reflect his improved status.

Congratulations Davy.

Good point about registrations Queso. Its about time the Leinster branch recognised that hockey is no longer an 11 man game. Every 1st team is now a squad of 16 players minimum. The way registrations work now is out-dated and badly needs to be re-evaluated.

queso makes a very valid point about Fitzy playing in goal for Monkstown 2nd's. The 2nd's and 3rd's keepers were away and Fitzy is registered 11 on the 1st's for that very reason. Its once in a blue moon when he's called upon but there for a reason. i'd be very surprised if 1st's keepers aren't below the line for several Div 1 teams and therefore don't think monkstown are doing anything wrong.

one of the main reason id think tht the likes of neil hamilton and paul gleghorne arent being picked is because they are too slow for international hockey. is there any other young defenders coming through?

Anonymous said...

Since when was pace an undermining factor in a defenders armory? Tim Lewis doesnt exactly possess international pace but has almost every other aspect at a high level.......

great to see one of the good guys like joe brennan getting his chance in the irish set up

Neil Hamillton is not upto international standard.

pace is one of the main factors these days.. tim lewis mightened be in the same league as the like of usain bolt but he isnt slow like gleghorne and hamilton...

Neil Hamilton is not an international defender, but i would say neither is Donaldson. Irish hockey is on the decline when you look at some of those players in that squad who do not stand out at club level on a weekly basis never mind compete at international level.

name the players who don't stand out then

Players who dont stand out - McCabe, Donaldson, Gleghorne, Magee, Black, Ireland have four excellent internationals, Lewers, Jermyn, Butler and Shaw. Two players they miss are Smyth who is world class and Sherrif

magee not stand out?! and lewers world class international yes but its a pity hes not opting to play for us anymore!

You obviously don't watch a lot of Ulster Hockey.

Magee's sheer pace and his skill on the reverse would make him without doubt one of the stand out players in the Ulster League.

McCabe - totally agree does not stand out even in the Bann team

Gleghorne - He won't stand out much longer for Ireland but he will stand out when he is wearing a GB shirt in 2012. He is the sort of player GB will love in their team. Strong, quick and when the chips are down will score you a goal. look at the boys record, top scorer OQT, major player when Ireland won the gold and silver back to back at Euro U18's.

Donaldson | the most comfortable ball playing right back in the ulster league without doubt. this guy never seems to turn over the ball. if anyone has an international future this boy has, it would free gormley up to play with Lewis at CB

Butler | when Stephen decides to turn it on he has superb talent, and is a stand out player at any level

Shaw | with everyone fit he would not start in my Irish team, he has lots of caps, but perhaps the younger players will be able to make more of an impact
