Men's Division One: Week Four results

Glenanne 1 (Stephen Butler) Monkstown 1 (Gareth Watkins)
On a fascinating day of Leinster League action, Glenanne-Monkstown take the honours for most controversial game of the day. The bare facts are that Gareth Watkins' second half goal cancelled out Stephen Butler's drag-flick for a share of the spoils.

The main talking point was the bizarre situation following Ian Horsfield's yellow card. His return to the pitch led to a major mix-up as Monkstown attempted a series of susbstitutions, the upshot of which saw two Town players onto the pitch with just one going off - leaving 12 players on the pitch.

The mistake was noticed after a couple of minutes, leading to captain Gareth Watkins having to serve a team yellow for the offence. Richie Beere was also binned, as the sky-blues finished the game with nine. Glenanne piled on the pressure in the closing stages with five corners but Dave Fitzgerald stood firm.

Other than that, the game saw chances at both ends, Monkstown's mainly from play, the Glens predominantly from the set-piece. The visitors had some impressive spells of possession, especially early in the second half. Ian Allen hit the post from a penalty stroke on a memorable day.

Fingal 1 (Adrian Sweeney) Pembroke 1 (Alan Sothern)
Adrian Sweeney's fifth in his last five games grabbed a point for Fingal with eight minutes to go in ALSAA. Sothern - with his fourth league goal - opened the scoring in the first half. He reacted fastest when his drag-flick was blocked down, striking in a reverse.
Fingal enjoyed some decent possession in the second half, in spite of Conor Connolly's sin-binning, and finally got the reward from David Bane's cross to Sweeney. Pembroke had a couple of late corners, though, to take the points but to no avail.

Railway Union 1 (Jeffrey Spillane) Corinthian 0
Railway defended stoutly to hold on for their first win of the season, withstanding several penalty corners at Park Avenue against Corinthian. Jeffrey Spillane (pictured) - currently involved with the Leinster U-16 panel - took a well-executed goal, latching onto Kenny Carroll's long pass outside the 25, beat a man before steadying well before crashing in a shot for his first division one goal.

It proved the difference as Corinthian missed Brian Doherty - out with a bruised bone - at the set piece. Alan McKibbin was the first keeper to halt Corinthian's progress before going off with a slight head injury. Patrick Jackman stepped in and kept the sheet clean.

Three Rock Rovers 2 (Phelie Maguire, Lucas Piccioli) Kilkenny 0
Rovers got top on their own this evening despite a poor performance, creating little against a compat and hard-working Kilkenny. Phelie Maguire got a touch to Peter McConnell's drag-flick in the first half and Lucas Piccioli slid in for a second.

Around that, 16-year-old Gareth Smith was in great form between the posts as he stepped in place of Mark Sandall and Stephen Thompson was solid in centre-defence. Rovers will need to step up next week, facing Terrassa in Europe.

How did Monkstown manage that 12 player mess-up?What a joke

Anonymous said...

saw the glens game...umpires really struggled with the game...a dubious stroke for the town and a definate stroke for the glens...the glens played some great hockey in the first half and the weather conditions were awful...dont think the town really got there rhythem going but great game to watch....from what i hear the glens are going to appeal the game because there was 12 players on for the town when they scored....queso, can u maybe clarify the rules on this matter???also does anybody kno the ruling on players wearing face masks outside the d after a short breaks down?

Anonymous said...

you'd wonder how long they have been doing this for??!

The 12 players was spotted by a spectator! The umpires did't even notice. Its possible Town scored with 11 on the pitch even though Horsefield was off the pitch with a yellow card? Glens would have every right to appeal. Super saves by the Town keeper. Glens really should have won it but 3 bad corners in the few minutes ruined it for them.

its only outside the 25 that you cannot wear the face mask! glenane bench was going crazy

was at the match and the town only played with 12 men for a total of 20seconds! horsefield brought himself back on once he was given the go ahead from the umpire while their coach was bringing on someone else for him. town did NOT score with 11 men on the field.

it was a soft penalty for the town but in my opinion the only decision that went in their favour. the last 5 short corners for glens were rediculous decisions!
regarding a definate stroke for the glens? don't no what game u were watchin certainly no penalty chances for them in that game!

lets be clear, glenanne supporter noticed monkstown had 12 players on the pitch. after spending time trying to tell the glenanne subs, then those players telling the bench, then the couple of minutes telling the umpires before they stopped and counted themselves..i guess your looking at a few minutes..oh..and that was only since it was noticed there were 12 on the field for them..so funnily enough..could have been for quite a bit of time..i can only imagine there would be a strong case for a re-fix.

Anonymous said...

Only re-fix I can think of was the Aer Lingus-Monkstown match a few years back when the umpires lost the time of the game, played 30 mins in the first half and 40 in the second or vice versa.

Not sure if that is a precedent or not but will be interesting how it gets dealt with

Glens v M'Town really good game despite awful weather.
Interesting to see how LB handles this one,Town player yellow carded, goes off,Town send on a sub.Town still have 11 players, score at this 1-0 to Glens, well into 2nd.half.Penalty over.Town player comes back on.Now they have 12 players.Everybody going crazy.Rules are clear.Town capt.responsible for correct subs.by his team.Game now 1-1.Umpires eventual stop match.Count players and yellow card Town Capt.
If we want Hockey to be taken as a serious sport, game HAS to be replayed or result stand as 1-0 to Glens.
During last 5 mins Town keeper earned his dinner, some great saves.
Re umpire at Town end, intentional offence in the circle by a defender against an opponent who has possession of the ball or an opportunity to play ball, decision is a PENALTY STROKE,NOT a Pen Corner.(rule12.4b).On two seperate occassions he awarded Glens a pen.corner.Big error.
For a foul in circle by defender, pen.corner can only be awarded, for an offence which does not prevent the probable scoring of a goal(rule 12.3a) or
for an intentional offence by a defender against an opponent who does NOT have possession of the ball or an opportunity to play the ball.12.3b
On both occassions Glens had possession of the ball and were fouled.Should have been awarded TWO strokes.
But lets see outcome of this crazy situation.

I was at the match as well and Monkstown definitely only had 10 men on the pitch when they scored. It was when Horsfield came back on that the mix up arose. It also resulted in Monkstown losing their most effective forward with Watkins being yellow carded at a time when they were on top. Some of the decisions were very questionable, especially Horsfields clean tackle which led to a short corner ( one of the best defensive tackles you would ever see). I am not surprised he was so incensed that he got a yellow card.

Ian Allen was indeed pushed in the back for the penalty stroke decission. I don't like to criticise umpires but I did feel that the Glens got everything in their favour including some very dubious short corner decissions.

The goal was scored with 10 on the pitch. A replay would be ridiculous; the Monkstown captain was yellow carded for an honest mistake. Umpires responsibility and arguably Arul's.

This situation does highlight the need for TD's at league games. Hard for umpires to monitor substitutions and umpire.

Would someone please explain the previous comment and why Arul is supposed to be responsible for how many players are on the pitch for Monkstown?????

Town supporters on this blog seem truly one eyed over the issue of 1,the extra TWO players they had on the field during the 2ne half.Rules of hockey are clear re substitution,Captain is responsible (3.4) NOT umpires.Blaming umpires AND Glens coach is bizarre.
2.See previous post re rules regarding fouls in circle.

Anyone at the Fingal - Pembroke game?

replay must be the option. Didn't seem an intentional mistake by Monkstown to get an advantage (though it was pretty silly). Umpire error and so walkover should defo be ruled out.

Is there any middleground to be found re monkstown fiasco?!?! Widely varying accounts of what happened. Understatements(Monstown) and exaggerations(Glenanne) but nobody yet is able to find a clear ruling.

Quite simply if a soccer team out twelve players on the pitch they would lose the points or the game would go to a replay.

But the fact is that the Leinster branch are a shambles will leave the result stand.

Anyone know who the two photographers at the Fingal Pembroke game in ALSAA were?

No idea, maybe someone from the Fingal Independent was out there. I think it comes out on a Tuesday.

Were Monkstown advantaged by having an extra player on the pitch??... Yes, Definitely.

Did the umpires eventually address this situation correctly??... Yes, Definitely.

We're Glenanne then equally advantaged after the umpires addressed the situation??... Yes, Definitely.

I believe this unfortunate situation has been levelled out during the match itself and the result should stand.

However, if evidence was presented that Monkstown were advantaged with an extra player for a considerable period of time.. i.e. more than the Monkstown captain was yellow carded for, then I could see Glenanne having a case for a reply. Perhaps the match was videoed??

""Understatements(Monstown) and exaggerations(Glenanne)"" to anonymous get real - thats called life !

jk

Queso's comment is very accurate. The situation was resolved on the pitch and the reason for Glens late pressure was the sinbinning for Town having 12 players on the pitch. It did not affect the result which was probably fair as a draw. Good game anyway with plenty of excitement.

How could you claim that having 11 players when you should have only 10 and then having 12 players when you should only have had 11,did not give a clear advantage to one team over the other.
Rules of Hockey are clear, the following rules of the game were broken during this incident:
Rule 2.1,2.3c/d,3.4,9.1.
It is obvious that the team who offended,M'Town, must be held responsible for this embarrasing debacle.
the very least LB must order a refix.Best result for M'Town, could easily have points awarded to Glens.

Rule 3671.a.b.r2d2 clearly states: "Dry your eyes mate".

Easy mistake; Glens have made it in the past and will make in future.

Anonymous said...

When did Glens make that mistake in the past.

Anonymous said...

i agree with queso for once..

amended on the pitch why cast further doubt over this sitchiyaaation..

Games are sorted out on the field and not in the Offices of the leinster branch

- Mistakes happen, none of us have ever played in a game were an umpire hasn't made a poor decision or missed somthing.

- Glenanne move on
- Monkstown sort out your management of the team
