* Monkstown U-16's, under the tutelage of Trevor Watkins and captain by David Cole, won the prestigious HOD International Tournament in Holland last weekend. After cruising through their group they beat rivals Banbridge 3-2 in a hotly contested semi-final.

Formidable Belgian outfit Royal Antwerp, the reigning champions, stood in the Dubliners’ way in what proved a classy, flowing game of hockey from both sides which ended 1-1 after extra time.

Two great penalty saves, though, from goalkeeper Stefan Gallagher left Johnny Byrnes to step up and fire the decisive stroke to hand Monkstown their first title at the Valkenswaard event.

* UCD men’s hockey club will hold their annual golf classic on Friday, April 16 in Edmondstown Golf Club, Rathfarnham. The cost per team of four is €500 which includes a round of golf and a three-course dinner. If you would like to sponsor a hole or a prize, it is €150 per hole. * Weston will face Avoca tonight in the semi-final of the Neville Davin Cup at Griffeen Valley Park with action underway at 8pm. Meanwhile, the Branch decision to award Avoca the points for Bray’s failure to fulfil their fixture last month has been overturned. The pair will now play their final league encounter on Saturday.
