Leinster Senior Mills Cup: Round Two

Clontarf 4 (Richard Forrest 2, Gareth Borland, Ciaran McNamara) Railway Union 2 (Kevin O'Brien, Mark English) Fresh from ending Three Rock's long unbeaten run, Railway fell to defeat to an impressive Clontarf side who have now set up a tie with either Pembroke or Skerries. Kevin O'Brien opened the scoring early on but Ciaran McNamara had the game level by half-time.

And the division two side showed why they are looking prime contenders for promotion after the break as Gareth Borland and Richie Forrest made it 3-1 before Mark English pulled one back for the visitors to the bullring.

But Forrest grabbed his second to complete the win to make it back-to-back wins over division one sides in the competition.

Corinthian 7 (Chris Pelow 2, Darren Kimfley, Rowland Rixon-Fuller, John McInroy, Carl Eggert, Glen Holmes) Dublin Uni 1 (Ben Hewitt)
Dublin University started brightly against Corinthian, taking the lead through Ben Hewitt - the former Leinster U-21 from Bangor finding his scoring form with four in three games this week. But the reds, spurred on by their new South African pair Andrew Cronje and Darren Kimfley soon got on top of the game, especially when Trinity's Daire Coady picked up a knock.

They took a 2-1 lead into the break and surged clear in the second half, Kimfley picking up his second of the weekend. The man from Eastern Province made his debut for South Africa in 2007 and joins the club while currently on summer vacation. Cronje, meanwhile, could well be here for a longer period and is a veteran of the 2006 World Cup in Monchengladbach and the 2008 Olympics.

Glenanne 4 (Gary Shaw 2, Eddie O'Malley, own goal) Suttonians 1 (Mukhtar Ahmed)
There was no fairytale return to Glenanne Park for Nasir Munir as the hosts eased into the last eight where they will face Corinthian. They went 4-0 up before Suttonians got a late consolation on the final whsitle. Munir - the former quadruple winning coach with the Glens - played for a short while against his old charges who again rested Stephen Butler and Graham Shaw with Richie Shaw and Alan Browne also sitting this one out.

Naas 2 (M Blake, L Connolly) Avoca 5 (Carl Breaden 2, Stephen Day, Scott Wilkie, Fergal McGuinness)
Avoca bagged a home quarter-final against the winner of Fingal and YMCA.

Congrats Clontarf, another great result. Anyone know when the postponed matches are due to be played?

saw glenanne versus sutts, score dosent reflect the game at all, credit to glenanne tho they finished there chances very well but sutts shud have scored more, the glens did well tho. why are the glens resting so many players, from what i saw they were missing butler, brennen the shaws, brown, doran?a bit of a risk playing with a second string 11!

Anonymous said...

How many players from Corinthians are now Irish??

Anonymous said...

Obviously no risk for the Glens at all seing as they won 4-1

Anonymous said...

Second 11s will beat Sutton and all bar maybe Clontarf from the 2nd Divison -

So its no risk at all to play them.

Hence the score - 4-1 !

Anonymous said...

oooh risky for the glens alright winning 4-1 and all like what audacity and crassness they'd want to watch themselves and play their internationals for these BIG mills games in fact they should just ignore the 14 game rule

If you look at clontarf's score this year v div 1 opposition i reckon they would beat all the 2nd teams..Clontarf have beaten ucd and railway..Drawn with Ymca and Kilkenny in friendlies and lost to a single goal to fingal and then in the Neville cup lost by just the 1 goal to Glenanne.

Anonymous said...

Just because they rest 4 or 5 players doesn make it there 2nds! That still leaves about 11 of there proper first squad. Sutts would beat glenannes 2nds

Glenanne rested Graham Shaw, Stephen Butler, Joe Brennan, Richie Shaw and Alan Browne. That's 5 players, not a whole team.

John Goulding Too

Who is this Shane o Donaghue Guy - seems to be hitting the Net Recently - is he from St Marks ? or imported in from another Club ?

Anonymous said...

Paul Fitzpatrick & Clinton Murphy were also missing

Anonymous said...

Shane O'Donoghue is all home grown, Glenanne legend Rory O'Donghue's son. Went to templeogue now in High school

Anonymous said...

according to all the above comments there must not have been 11 Glenanne players on the pitch yesterday!

Anonymous said...

Paul and Clinton played right and left back respectively. Shane is son of Rory (now Monkstown coach) and Clinton's nephew also.

Johnny Goulding doesn't really turn out for the firsts much anymore so not really rested.

paul fitzpatrick and clinton murphy were playing played the whole match, someone must of been watching the wrong game

Tom Morgan wasn't playing either

8 out of the 1st team squad in CHC are Irish...so in essence, what is the comment you are making..you are not glad to see foreign people playing in Irish hockey?? So Pembroke last year and the year before had the same amount of foreign players in their squad? Every team in Ireland brings in foreign players, which benefits the Irish game. And for the record, I am Irish, and welcome any foreign influence to our shores. Look at the EHL and count how many of the professional teams have foreign players... ehh yah!...A.P.

Anonymous said...

It's usually varies between 8-10 Irish in a CHC 1s squad on any given week.

This includes two imports, who are at least plastic Paddys by now...both Dan Williams(Aus) and Miles Warren(SA) have nearly been playing for CHC for 10 seasons. Hardly blow-ins at this stage...

I agree that a balance has to be struck but that's a club issue, in terms of keeping other paying playing members happy but on the wider issues of people from foreign soil coming to play/coach for ANY club in Ireland...I think it only betters the game in this country.

As a Fingal player i seem to remember beating Clontarf 4-1 not by a single goal but 3, i could be wrong memory may not be what it was.

Open to clarification

I hear that all abandoned league games are to be replayed from the start. Branch fixtures comm meeting on monday night decided this, looks like clontarf and trinity will have to do it all again against navan and naas respectivly! At last a clear decision on the subject which can finally put this whole argument to rest!

A small matter of a 6-2 drubbing to Kilkeel as well. We need to hear the good amd the bad.

Anonymous said...

I dont think anyone is trying to hide the bad!

Kilkeel are a class side in fairness to them, I would imagine they'll get promoted back to Premier this year and they totally outplayed us on the day, no excuses.

We have played Fingal twice, lost by 1 goal the first time and 3 the second. Most people watching will tell you the 4 - 1 didnt reflect the second game.

We also played very badly on Saturday against Weston and were lucky to come away with such a flattering scoreline.

So again, noone is trying to hide the bad results!

The Clontarf v Navan game is to be refixed. This is after the branch accepted an official result of Navan conceding the match. Does anyone know who is on the fixtures committee?

By Navan not turning up to play the last refixture they have managed, instead of getting sanctioned for not fulfilling a match, to get the game restarted from fresh. I now wonder what will happen the original red card from the game? No doubt, in their wisdom, the branch have taken this into account!

Its great to see such clarity and transparancy on these issues from the LB!!! Stephen, could you approach them and ask them for a statement on these issues?

Stephen Findlater said...

On this issue, the red card is not a fixture committee issue and, as such, will still be dealt with by the disciplinary committee.

Stephen Findlater said...

As regards the refixing of the Clontarf-Navan game, I was informed early last week by a fixtures representative that protocol was not followed in the rearrangement of the fixture.

I'd assume this is the reason for the match having to be replayed in full.

some of these comments are halarious,

Fact g.shaw, butler rested as of the 14 game rule. Brennen had work commitments, rithie shaw was injured, browne was rested and fitx, murphy and doran all played. Get it right and obviously not a risk as they dominated and played well.

Anonymous said...

On the subject of red cards and suspensions, will Rob Abbott have to re-serve his 1 match ban now that the original Clontarf v Navan match was not a complete game so therfor, Has he served a 1 match Ban?

Anonymous said...

there is no point in clontarf reading much into there friendly results as most teams dont play there strongest teams, they generally use the games to give seconds players a chance...but its good to see them doing well against div 1 teams

Anonymous said...

Rixi scored for us on sunday v trinity.

Anonymous said...

As previous poster said, no point reading into friendly results for Clontarf, agree with that. therefore, clontarf have played competitive games against glenanne, ucd and railway, won2 and lost 1 by a single goal, pretty impressive.

Anonymous said...

I'm guessing that Rob's suspension probably has to be carried forward to Clontarf's next match. Is that the Skerries match on the 10th of january?

Anonymous said...

Firstly as I`m sure Fingal will agree with, we played their full team or certainly very close to a full team in our friendlies

And if we can`t look into our friendlies as a sign we`ll just look at our compeditive results against Div 1 oppo which include 2 wins and a narrow loss to Glenns

Anonymous said...

Okay well done 'tarf'.Now stop the talking and lets see where you finish at the end of the season. And if you do go up,lets see how you fair with the big boys.

Anonymous said...

yeh personally i dont think "tarf" could hack it with the big boys. They don't really have the strength in depth and they would struggle to make inroads into Div. 1

Anonymous said...

if you really are a clontarf player you should stop posting about how great yous are and concentrate on winning the league...nothing is won at christmas. personally I hope you do go up and stay up, it be good for the league to have another north dublin team

Anonymous said...

I know we haven`t won anything I`m just trying to go against the common beliefs of certain people that if a division 2 team put it up to a division one side it must be because they have their 2nds out.

Anonymous said...

but that is the reason, you should be beating a divison 1 seconds team because their in a lower divison than you

Anonymous said...

No, clontarf playd the ucd and railway div. 1 sides. Its not their fault that there's such a strong prejudice against north dublin teams, never min div.2. Tarf are having a good year so why can't it just be left at that?

Anonymous said...

speaking as a tarf player, we are more than delighted with the way results have gone against div 1 teams so far but this season is all about promotion. we will debate how good a div 1 team we are if we get promotion. until then we know the league is not won yet and we wont take our foot off the gas. although we have won games, weston is the perfect example of how have not fully performed to our potential this season yet!!!

Am I missing something ? Clontarf is doing well, getting the best out of themselves, winning even when having a bad day. Can motivate themselves to take on 1st div. teams in cups or practice matches. Who knows where it will end, but to start already, talking them down, even before they are there(1st div.).' No dept in width, players etc.' ! Do they, also, have to buy 3-6 foreign players to win your Leinster league ?! Don't think so. When good enough, they will held their own, when not, back in div. 2 again. You play to your best abilities, what does, any coach/club wants more ?! Your own guys are good enough, could work a bit harder though, but your coaching staff should be 'upgraded' very soon, and you will get there.
Look at several 'smaller clubs', who made it into the 1st-2nd div. How come ? Invested in coaching !
Many of who I have seen several years ago at Level 1-2 courses. Well done, the way to go. Expect nothing less than National Men/Women to qualify for Olympics
in London.
