Women's Division One: Week 9 Results

Pembroke 2 (Louisa Moore, Emily McNicholas) Trinity 2 (Danielle Costigan, Rachel Scott)
Trinity produced a third good result in a row as their young side showed they are learning quickly, recovering from a two-goal deficit to draw with Pembroke. Trailing 2-0 in the second half, Danielle Costigan scored from a penalty corner rebound before Rachel Scott scored from a straight hit, again at the set-piece to settle matters.

It adds to Trinity's draw in midweek with UCD and a 6-0 win in the cup and shows there may still be life in their bid to avoid relegation with some newfound confidence.

Old Alex 0 Loreto 3 (Lizzie Colvin, Nikki Keegan, Niamh Small)

Loreto replaced Old Alex in second spot thanks to an excellent first half performance, capped by Niamh Small's sensational goal to make it 3-0. Lizzie Colvin had earlier opened the scoring from a corner rebound off Nikki Symmons drag-flick. Nikki Keegan made it two after a flowing move, tapping in at the back post, set up by Small.

Small, though, was slightly more selfish for the third, creating and scoring one of the goals of the season, carrying the ball from far out on the right before entering the circle and chipping into the far corner. From then on, Loreto took their foot slightly off the gas, perhaps with an eye on tomorrow's big game against Hermes.

Glenanne 0 UCD 1 (Fiona Braddish)

UCD move into a tie for second place, recording a tight 1-0 win in Glenanne thanks to Fiona Braddish's early goal. She netted from the second phase of a corner, assisted by Lisa Jacob in another game delayed by the frost.

Glenanne almost salvaged a point late on with two clear-cut chances, one of which was superbly saved by Grace O'Flanagan in an one-on-one situation.

Does anyone know what happens if the teams top of div 2 at the end of the season are 2nds teams, is there promotion/relegation?

no promotion or relegation if that happens

two years ago Genesis 1 became 6th in div 2, a kind of similar situation, and they still got promoted so no 2nds team can get in to div. 1. In case your 1st were to be in relegation danger: this could be a way to let them stay 'up' as you can not go 'up'. Depending how far down, Leinster decides to go with promotion for a 1st team.
Hockey level wise: the answer has been given, several times, by now.
Keep up the good work.

Trinity showing that they have the talent to compete in the first division. All those doubters should keep an eye for the rest of the season. Good on them. That said, they have a pretty big hole to dig themselves out of and need to start forcing results against the teams around them in order to get themselves out of relegation zone

In Munster there is a rule which caters for this situation.

If the top finishing 1st team does not get automatic promotion then they are granted the option of a challenge against the lowest non-relegated team in the division above. If they win the challenge then they are promoted & the losing team is relegated.

It means that there is always a way for 1st teams in lower divisions to leapfrog strong 2nd teams.

Anyone have any theories as to why the UCD team that started the season so strong is fading now? Draw to Trinity and near miss to Glenanne? Worrying for the students although good news for the others near the top of the table

exams possibly? . .unfortunate for the students that no allowance seems to be made for this. ihl refix is rescheduled for the weekend in the middle of their exams. stress over studying is likely to come onto the pitch.
