Irish Senior Cup - Men's Quarters

Pembroke 3 (Justin Sheriff 2, John McInroy) Cookstown 1 (Ian Hutchinson)
In a high quality ISC encounter, Pembroke ran out 3-1 winners against Ulster league leaders on a day when Justin Sheriff scored one of the great goals the competition has seen - running solo fully 60 metres with the ball. They went into the break at half-time 2-0 up before extending the lead to three in the second period. Ian Hutchinson pulled one back and Cookstown had a number of chances, with 10 short corners but could not score.

TRR 0 Monkstown 1 (Filip Jaros)
If the Pembroke match was noted for its quality, this was one of the most dramatic afternoons in recent ISC history. The Town survived 18 short corners, two sin-binnings and two penalty strokes to go through to the last four of the ISC after Filip Jaros' delightful first minute goal proved decisive. In a whirlwind start, they scored from their second penalty corner, switching right for Jaros to dummy Charlie Henderson before flicking high into the net. Town had to absorb huge amounts of pressure in the second half, surviving on the break with Simon Groves and Gareth Watkins providing good relief. They also had an inspired David Fitzgerald in goal. He saved both Peter McConnell's penalties, the first diving full length to stop with his stick, as well as a number of fine saves from an endless chain of drag-flicks. Kyle Good and Michael Maguire also had gilt-edged chances late on but could not get an equaliser.

* Full match report and pictures will be in the Gazette newspapers next Wednesday.

Cork Harlequins 1 (John Hobbs) Lisnagarvey 2 (Timmy Cockram 2)
Garvey made yet another ISC semi-final with Timmy Cockram scoring his eighth and ninth goals in this season's competition overcoming Harlequins to end Munster's involvement in this year's cup

Instonians 2 (Mark Gleghorne, Chris Kirk) Annadale 1 (Ian Hamilton)
Inst pulled off a shock as Ulster's fifth-placed side put paid to last year's finalists in the Ulster derby.

Semi-final draw: (Saturday, April 5)
Pembroke Wanderers v Instonians
Lisnagarvey v Monkstown

fitzy was unbelievable for the town yesterday. they all played their socks off, but without fitzy in goals could of been a different result, espically with the 2 umpires clearly rovers fans!

Agree that it was an inspired defensive performance by Monkstown and they also used their opportunities from fast counter-attacking breakouts to great effect, maximising every limited time in posession by working the ball up the other end to create occassional chances.

To say though that the umpires we clearly rover's fans is quite harsh.

Both penalty strokes were for the ball hitting a defender on it's way to the goal after the goalkeeper had been out-maneouvered. Can't argue with either of those.

And indeed on another occassion the umpire correctly awarded a free-out to Monkstown when the ball was flicked into a defender at close range on the goal-line, although it was goal bound.

In addition the 3 yellow cards were also consistent. (2 for Monkstown; 1 for TRR) I understand the 1st was for abusive language towards the umpire and the second was for a body-check. A similar body-check also resulted in the yellow card for Rovers.

Rovers simply had the lions share of posession, territory and resultant set-pieces but just couldn't score in a brothel!!!!

You get games like that occassionally... but best of luck to Monkstown in the Semi's... and of course I have to say there was great banter on the sidelines :-D

queso i don't know if you're right about the 2 strokes. i think both were fairly harsh (although i might be biased!!). one was definately going wide and the other was for a stick tackle when i thought the rovers player hit a monkstown players flat stick. Having said that it made it into some game to watch. The banter on the sideline was great craic. Can't argue with the sendings off. although i think alan lewis was cursing at himself rather than the umpire.

Just like to point out, my sending was very unfair as i didn't say anything to the umpire and anyone who was beside the incident will back me up. I was amazed as I know i sometimes say things when bad decisions are made during games but I didn't say anything during the whole game and what do I get in return my first yellow of the season. Amazed i tell you!!! Amazed!!
Thought Fitzy was unreal. The lads in defense say that the first flick was definetly not a stoke but the second was. I thought 3Rock were humble in defeat which was great to see. Fair play gave us a great game.
Next step Garvey!!!

will have to be strong umpiring present at the garvey match..the garvey defenders typically don't give an inch..off the ball antics all over the shop...

'town can do it tho..
